The main objective of the Malta Innovation Awards, is that of encouraging the development of innovative ideas and products which have potential, are unique and sustainable. 
 
The 8th edition of the Malta Innovation Awards for 2017, organised by the Commerce Department, within the Ministry for the Economy, Investment and Small Businesses, was held on the 5th March 2018, during which the finalists in the respective categories were announced, and each awarded a Trophy and Monetary Prize:
 
Award for Creative Innovation
 
Winner: Ing. Marco Cremona, Prof. Alexiei Dingli – ‘ECO-Logic (Malta) – Teaching Sustainable Development Through Gaming’
 
Runner up: Ms. Laura Swale – ‘Allura - Malta Open Art Studios’
 
Award for Scientific Innovation
 
Winner: Prof. Ing. Tonio Sant, Dr. Ing. Daniel Buhagiar, Dr. Ing. Robert N Farrugia – ‘FLASC – Integrated Offshore Energy Storage’
 
Runner up: MaltaHip Team: Prof. Pierre Schembri Wismayer, Dr. Ing.Joseph Buhagiar, Dr. Ing. Pierluigi Mollicone, Mr. Donald Dalli – ‘A Novel Hip Joint Simulator for Testing New Implants’
 
Award for Technological Innovation
 
Winner: Carlo Gavazzi Malta Ltd, Dr. Reiko Raute, Ing. Jason Demicoli – ‘HDMS: High Dynamic Motor Starter’
 
Runner up: Dr. Ing. Alex Rizzo, Eng. Christian Camilleri – ‘Agrivoltaic Microsolutions’
 
Emerging Innovator Award
 
Winner: Mr Bernard Montebello – ‘Montebello Digital Art’
